Caring for Collections in the Tropics - Paintings
In the Philippines and Southeast Asian region, the extreme humidity and heat pose particular challenges to the care of art and other cultural materials. Museums that are tasked with the preservation of collections are forced to take intensive measures to control storage and gallery conditions through specialized HVAC systems and dedicated preservation specialists –but what can be done on a domestic level? This talk discusses common types of damage in homes encountered by the Lopez Museum and Library’s Conservation Center, particularly in relation to paintings. It aims to assist custodians with the maintenance of collections by deepening their understanding of how damage occurs, what measures can be done for preventive care, and when to call a conservator. Moderated by Boots Herrera This talk is made possible with special participation of the López Museum & Library. Watch the event footage on Youtube.

Empower or Empire
There are two types of humans, those that empower and those that are empire builders. There are points where the two converge in some humans and can do harmoniously, but within reason, they remain separated by a big margin. Collectors, art fairs, galleries, auction houses, marketplaces, artists mediums, curators, writers, audiences, and most of all - the artists - require empowerment for their individual roles in the artworld ecosystem. The talk will look at how to empower the artist for the best advantage of all. The artist in the contemporary artworld needs this empowering, as it is an unusual role and livelihood. And when art businesses and artworld projects are built on the notion of being about art, then clearly it is the artist that needs utmost empowering attention. This talk is made possible with the support of our exhibition partner, the British Council. About the Speaker David Gryn has curated Film, Video and sound projects for Art Basel, Frieze, Armory Show, Independent NY, EXPO Chicago, NADA, Art Fair Philippines, Art Rio, Art Cologne, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai, Art LA Contemporary and many more. Pambabae: Exploring Abstraction by Women Artists 1969-1989
A special exhibit that aims to explore Abstract Art created by a selection of female artists between 1969 to 1989, framed within two decades that saw an explosion of creativity in the arts, starting from the creation of the Cultural Center of The Philippines, and capped off by a year where many historic world events and changes took place ranging from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the beginnings of the World Wide Web. This exhibit will showcase a mix of names from the recognized to those who are ready to be reexamined for their contributions. Most of these female artists have largely been overshadowed by their male contemporaries, and many rightfully deserve a reappraisal. The works on exhibit will not only showcase painting, but will also include printmaking and ceramic works. Artworks are by the following artists: Phyllis Zaballero, Cipra Kamatoy, Ileana Lee, Lilian Hwang, Jeannie Javellosa, Impy Pilapil, Pacita Abad, Nelfa Querubin, Nena Saguil, Evelyn Collantes, Yola Johnson, Ivi Cosio Watch the event footage on Youtube.
